Whitehead won the intermediate level essay. Students were required to present information, concepts and ideas to inform, explain and persuade the audience in a language that is not their native language. Teachers of the winning students are invited to attend the Spring Conference Awards Luncheon to accept the award on behalf of their students.
The program focuses on allowing students to spend time immersed in the language and interacting with native language teachers while exploring a large range of content.
The school-wide celebration will encompass music, entertainment and student presentations with each grade level focused on a different theme. For example, kindergarteners will sing a song about chickens in Spanish and create an animal display; 4th graders will research, prepare and present a presentation on birds native to Spanish speaking countries; and 6th graders will research and present traditional foods and beverages from Spanish speaking countries.
This full day event will showcase student work from kindergarten — 4th grade in the morning and 5th — 7th grade in the afternoon. Eighth grade students will assist students in classrooms throughout the day. The school utilizes the Core Knowledge sequence, an award-winning character education program and a district-recognized model foreign language program to deliver instruction allowing students to meet their highest academic potential.
